CLIMATE CHANGE AN OUTCOME OF ANTHROPOGENIC FACTORS Essay
CLIMATE CHANGE AN OUTCOME OF ANTHROPOGENIC FACTORS - Essay Example The Intergovernmental panel on climate change at the Kyoto protocol determined in 2007 that ââ¬Å"most of the observed increase in global average temperatures since the mid-20th century is very likely due to the observed increase in anthropogenic greenhouse gas concentrationsâ⬠[2]. Furthermore, based on the assumption that significant anthropogenic warming has taken place over the past 50 years over each continent except Antartica, it has been concluded that anthropogenic climate change is having a significant impact on physical and bilogical systems globally [3]. Climate change is occuring on all continents and in most oceans. Changes in the natural system since 1970 have been occuring where temperature increase has taken place. These changes cannot be explained by natural climate variations alone. This implies that climate change is primarily attributable to anthropogenic factors. The Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) conclude that the earth is warming and tha t humans are probably the cause. Technologies to decrease greenhouse gas emissions and strategies for carbon sequestraion have been found to be essential as species extinction has been found to be related to climate warming [4].

Successful Management of a Diverse Workforce Essay -- Workforce Employ
Successful Management of a Diverse Workforce Successful management of a diverse workforce poses many challenges in the confusing aspects of diversity that exist in todayââ¬â¢s workplace. Equal employment opportunity is an attempt to pay retribution for past errors and many say it was a good beginning but more is needed. We commonly read and hear the increasingly popular term diversity training. The new catchphrase to be found gaining popularity in the workforce is inclusion. With all these confusing concepts, just how can management develop a successful strategy to manage a diverse workforce? The term diversity needs to be defined, as it is applicable in the workplace. Equal Employment Opportunity focused primarily on gender and race. Diversity, though, is filled with many more criteria than just gender and race. Diversity is defined in one article (ââ¬Å"Value of Cultural Diversity,ââ¬Å" 1997) as ââ¬Å"not part of the mainstream, popular culture. In this nation, our popular culture, or ideal business success, is white, young, heterosexual, Christian, and male.â⬠This description, while blunt, may indeed reflect what diversity in the workforce represents. Anyone in the workforce who does not meet the criteria stated in the article would be an example of diversity. When we add age, marital or family status, sexual orientation, religious beliefs, and disabilities the pool of a diverse workforce outside of gender and race gets rather deep indeed. Management strategies must adapt to be effective in managing this expanded diverse workforce. Management in America has historically always dealt with a diverse workforce. During the days under British colonialism a majority of the workforce were religious minorities, political dissidents, minor criminals, and indentured servants from Britain. Further diversifying the workforce was the practice of importing African slaves. After the American Independence, the American workforce began seeing many German and Irish immigrants who were Roman Catholic, which increased as the nineteenth century progressed. Actually, according to Hatton and Williamson (1998), during the second half of the nineteenth century, ââ¬Å" the rate of Irish emigration was more than double that of any other European country, with as many as 13 per thousand emigrating each yearâ⬠. While the Irish were flooding the workforce from Europe, the Chinese were also flowing into... ...r of the skin we're born with but we can control what we put in our noses.â⬠When does inclusion become intrusion on the dominant culture? How far must the dominant culture bend over to accommodate the multitude of differences found in todayââ¬â¢s society? As a nation of diversity, havenââ¬â¢t we already adapted enough without making special concessions for every person with a difference? Recognizing both the differences and the commonalities among the various individuals comprising oneââ¬â¢s workplace and instituting fair and balanced strategies are the keys to successful management of a diverse workforce. Barack Obama :: American Politics, Leadership
In 2007 when then Senator Barack Obama announced his run for the presidency of the United States, the country was experiencing great turmoil and people were ready for a change in leadership. No matter what political party you held, it appeared to be an overwhelming sentiment that people were looking for a shift in direction, especially relating to the bad economical positions a lot of Americans had found themselves in. All of the challenges that the country was experiencing was a sign that the next President would have to lead based on social, political and economical environments. This diverse demand was aligned with the more contemporary study of match the leaderââ¬â¢s style with the demand of the assignment. To better ensure a leaderââ¬â¢s effectiveness, many high profile leaders are being singled out as a way to correlate success with a leaderââ¬â¢s approach. As a contemporary leader, President Barak Obamaââ¬â¢s leadership style is constantly being critiqued. Although many still debate the effectiveness of his presidency, most people agree that his transformational leadership approach was the prescribed style the country was in need of. Leadership Traits I believe that defining a leader by one set of traits can be challenging, if not impossible. That is mostly likely that when you research leadership traits you come across various opinions; among them is Baker (2001) who believes that when leaders are defined they should be defined based on the traits associated with three systems. These systems (Baker, 2001) include the classical system, the equilibrium system, and the transforming system. Each of the systems (Baker 2001) has traits associated with them, for the exception of the transforming system. If we buy into Bakerââ¬â¢s trait theory (2001), the transforming system would be the group that would set the stage for defining the leadership needs that the United States was experiencing when President Obama took office. In the transforming system the leaderââ¬â¢s role cannot be defined in advance, but emergences from the dissipative or transforming processes (Baker, 2001). As we see the constant introduction of challenges since President Obama took office his leadership style has had to adjust to function effectively. Leadership Styles As defining what leadership traits are has evolved, so follows the leadership styles and how they are best used. Some of these styles include charismatic leadership, transformational leadership, transactional leader, situational leaders, directive leadership style, coaching leadership style, supporting leadership style, and delegating leadership style.

Importance of Marriage and Money in Austenââ¬â¢s Pride and Prejudice and Today Essay
During the days of Jane Austen, a financially stable marriage was crucial to many women. On the contrary, some of the women did not think marriage was mainly about money. These concepts reflect through some of Austenââ¬â¢s characters in her comic novel of manners, Pride and Prejudice. While writing this novel, Austen illustrates the way of life during her time period through her characters. The idea of marriage being financially crucial to some women is not as true today like it was during Austenââ¬â¢s time period. Womenââ¬â¢s lives have changed considerably over the past years, making this idea not as common. Women today do not have problems in common with those of Austenââ¬â¢s characters. After reading Austenââ¬â¢s Pride and Prejudice, readers can compare the financial problems of women today to those of the women of Austenââ¬â¢s time, finding the difference between them the importance of money and marriage. The female characters in Austenââ¬â¢s novel go through great lengths to catch a husband. Unlike marriages today, many marriages in Austenââ¬â¢s time were not based off love, but security for the future. Most women wanted to marry wealthy men to insure their financial and social future: ââ¬Å"In cases nine out of ten, a woman had better show more affection than she feels.â⬠Charlotte Lucas makes this statement to Elizabeth during the beginning of the novel. This statement shows the feeling of most women during Austenââ¬â¢s time, which was that a women should show more affection towards a man than she actually felt in order to get him to propose to her. Women went through great lengths to fake emotions for a marriage proposal. ââ¬Å"Happiness in marriage is entirely based a matter of chance.â⬠This is another statement Charlotte makes to Elizabeth in order to let her know that women can only hope to find happiness in a marriage. Marriage was only important for women so they could have balanced, secure financial and social statuses; finding happiness would only be a ââ¬Å"matter of chanceâ⬠. Austenââ¬â¢s novel illustrates and satirizes the importance of women finding a wealthy husband during that time period: ââ¬Å"You must know that I am thinking of his marrying one of them.â⬠Mrs. Bennett biggest concern was marrying her daughters off to wealthy men such as Mr. Bingley. She knew that marriage was an important issue to all women during that time. Mrs. Bennett found herself a wealthy husband in Mr. Bennett, and hopes that her daughters do the same: ââ¬Å"If I can but see one of my daughters happily settled at Netherfield and all the others equally well married, I shall have nothing to wish for.â⬠If all Bennett girls get married Mrs. Bennett will be happy. She wishes for nothing else but for her daughters to be married to wealthy men. Mrs. Bennett goes as far as to plot to get her daughter, Jane Bennett, sick so she will be able to stay at Netherfield with Mr. Bingley. She herself does anything to get her daughters married because she believes that marriag e is the crucial part of a womanââ¬â¢s life. Not all women during this time period thought marriage should be based solely off money. ââ¬Å"As yet, she cannot be certain of the degree of her own regard, nor of its reasonableness. She has known him only a fortnight.â⬠Elizabeth feels that people should form a relationship with one another and know a little about each other before marriage is considered. Knowing a person for only one night is not enough time for one to familiarize their selves with the other personââ¬â¢s character. She also does not hide her feelings and is quick to express them, which was not truly common at the time. She believes marriage should be based off happiness and is exceedingly serious about the power people have to make each other happy or unhappy. Today marriage does not play such major a role in womenââ¬â¢s lives, unlike in Jane Austenââ¬â¢s times. Women, of course, dream of getting married but they do not base their marriages off of money but off of love and happiness. Time changes accompanied with the change of feelings towards women makes the concept of marrying for money archaic. For example, women are deemed equal to men in todayââ¬â¢s society. Sequentially women are able to obtain jobs considered suitable for only men. This advancement allows women freedom from men and autonomy in their own homes. Women have become independent and are expected to be more than homemakers. Now, women have the option of daycare for their children while they hold regular jobs. Women are given more opportunities today then they were in the past, and are quick to take advantage of those opportunities. There are special circumstances in which women with little or no education try to get married to men that are ââ¬Å"going placesâ⬠or even women who are referred to as ââ¬Å"gold-diggers,â⬠who dedicate their lives to finding husbands. Besides these few exceptions, women do not seek out husbands to secure their future financially and socially, like those of the women in Austenââ¬â¢s novel, Pride and Prejudice. After finishing Pride and Prejudice good analytical readers can compare the marriage problems of women in past to women in the present. Marriage was critical to women of the past for financial and social status. On the contrary, today, marriage is not as vital to women financially. Women have not only become financially and socially independent, but independent in all aspects. The present has changed drastically from the past meaning that marriage is not as important to most women today for financial reasons, as in the past.
